Default Malcolm Naden - Suspected killer who hides in bush like a ghost

The only fugitive since Ned Kelly to have a bounty on his head, the suspected double killer is moving by night, lying low by day. Locals who have been the target of a series of mysterious break-ins believe Naden may be responsible. A shotgun, two rifles, camping gear, gravy sachets and Weet-Bix are among the haul stolen from remote homesteads and weekender cabins. Police have warned at least one couple who were the victim of a burglary to stay away from their weekend retreat. One property owner said he had started locking his doors for the first time in his 67 years. Naden, 36, has been on the run since June 2005 when police found the strangled body of his cousin, Kristy Scholes, in his bedroom at his grandparents' Dubbo home. In dense bush among the ravines and cliffs of the Barrington Tops , Malcolm Naden - the states most wanted man - is believed to be armed and living like a fox on the run. rss Officer shot as police hunt fugitive

POLICE were last night scouring bushland in northern NSW for one of Australia's most elusive fugitives.

The move comes after an officer from the elite State Protection Group was shot as searchers closed in on accused murderer Malcolm Naden.

The 33-year-old officer was struck in the shoulder as police from an armed tactical response unit approached a remote campsite near Nowendoc, about 100km southeast of Tamworth, at about 7am yesterday.

Officers, including those from the SPG, were searching for Mr Naden, wanted for the 2005 murder of a 24-year-old woman in Dubbo and an aggravated sexual assault on a 15-year-old girl.

Police also want to question Mr Naden in connection with the disappearance of another 24-year-old woman in Dubbo in 2005.

Mr Naden, an expert bushman who is considered extremely dangerous, has given police the slip many times. He has a $100,000 bounty on his head and has been on the run for more than six years.

HE knows which berries and nuts are edible, and which ones will poison him.

He can lay animal traps and knows how to cook snakes and lizards, and where to find fresh water.

He even knows how to use the land to heal his wounds.
