The Missy Avila Case
This case is so sad and has been made into a movie it was so disturbing.
Missy Avila was murdered on October 1st, 1985.She was only 17 years old.
Her murder was cruel, she had been beaten and her hair had been cut off, then she was held under 5 inches of water in a shallow stream and drowned.
Her murderers placed a 100lb. log over her back, to pin her in the water permanently and to be certain she was killed.
For 3 years police and family hunted for her killer. Her best friend, Karen Severson, was quoted as saying "I loved Missy and I will not rest until I catch the animal that did this to my best friend." She was so close to Missy and the family that she moved in with Missy's Mom for awhile helping to organize the search for Missy's killer.
For 3 years, no one suspected the truth. In 1988, a surprise witness came forward and for the first time, Missy's loved ones found out what had really happened to Missy.
Missy's two best friends in the world, Karen Severson and Laura Doyle, were actually her murderers. When confronted with the truth, Karen and Laura admitted to killing Missy. They had been jealous of Missy, she had been attracting too much attention from the boys in their high school class.
Missy's family was heartbroken. Her murderers were the same girls who had attended slumber parties at Missy's house when they were younger, they had both known Missy for years and were closer to her family then anyone else. As close as they were to her murderers, they still wanted justice. In 1989, Karen Severson and Laura Doyle were sentenced to 15 years to life for murder in the 2nd degree. May Missy rest in peace forever.
