A policeman has been shot and killed on a busy street in Port Moresby during an apparent robbery attempt.

The officer was shot several times at close range yesterday afternoon after the utility he was travelling in was stopped by another car full of armed men.

The National newspaper reports the policeman was escorting representatives of a rubber company on a cash run to a bank.

Witnesses told the paper the armed men ordered the people in the utility to get out, shot the policeman, and then sped off.

Another witness said they saw the armed men remove two guns from the utility, but it is not clear whether any money was stolen.
