Victoria police officers cop drug charges

TWO Victorian police officers who were involved in a relationship will face court next year to face criminal drug charges.

The man and woman had both worked as deep undercover operatives for Victoria Police when they allegedly became addicted to heroin.

The pair, both senior constables, have been charged with possessing and using a drug of dependence. The man has also been charged with theft, following an Ethical Standards Department investigation.

The case raised fears that other undercover operations had been compromised and forced a review of all undercover cases, especially those in which they were involved.

They were both arrested and suspended in August. The man, who had been working at the Footscray police station, has since resigned.

The woman remains suspended without pay.

They were also accused of committing credit card fraud to fund their alleged heroin use, but have not been charged.
