The Police and Sheriff are both law enforcing organisations. These two departments work together in many ways.
One of the main differences between the Police and the Sheriff is related to their area of jurisdiction. The Police are involved in a very diverse array of duties usually within a city or town, where the Sheriff Department covers law enforcement state wide.
Another difference is, while the Police handles all city calls and other calls that pertain to their jurisdiction limits, the Sheriff Office handles all calls from the county. As the sheriff’s have a higher jurisdiction, they can often help the various police departments.
While the sheriff’s are elected officials, the Police chiefs are appointed.
In some states Sheriff Officers work within the Jail and Prison System, they will start their training here then move on to regular duties.
Most of all Police and Sheriff Officers are peace officers and work together to enforce the law.
